PHOTO WALK: 06/10/19 - Snowdonia - Barmouth and Ganllwyd

As I promised in my last post I was going to speak about our Sunday walks in Snowdonia. We slept really well after strolling down from Snowdon the previous day and left the B&B only around 10am. We didn’t want to have a longer challenging walk so we decided to check out the local beach along the Promenade, the Marina and National Trust’s Dinas Oleu (Citadel Of Light) up on the hill. This is a gorse-covered hill where the view towards the Mawwdach Estuary is worth every penny. The tide was out so I had the chance to take a couple of photos around the area.

After spending about half an hour looking around we were heading to Dinas Oleu. It’s really a beautiful and probably underrated walk. We climbed the hill from the northern side where you can find scenic view of the town below.

Just 10-15 minutes further you reach Dinas Oleu. This is a fenced area and the top of the hill gives you the best scenery. When we arrived here I realised I should have woken up earlier for taking a sunrise shot. I put it down to my bucket list.

From here there is a path leading back to the town. After just 15 minutes we were back in the car park and had a quick lunch. Then we decided to go for a woodland walk next to Ganllwyd. The road goes along the River Mawddach and takes only 20 minutes drive from Barmouth. We stopped in the National Car Park of Dolmelynllyn Estate.

There are leaflets available here describing the different walks of the area. We combined two paths, Blue and Red. The main attractions of the walks are the waterfalls on river Gamlan or as they say Afon Gamlan. There is a lot to photograph here. Lush green vegetation, beautiful ancient woodland and the waterfalls of course. The walk starts along the river and you don’t have to wait more than 3-5 minutes to find the first little gem. The photo taken here became one of my favourite of this trip.

Next one to see is the main attraction of the river. Rhaeadr Ddu or Black Falls is a 20 meter high waterfall cascading down in two steps. The falls themselves are huge so I didn’t try to frame them all. I rather included the bottom part only with the nice curves of the river coming afterwards.

From here the path leads deeply into the woods. There are also lot to see and photograph there too. Unfortunately we had not much time left so we carried on walking and didn’t stop for further photos worth showing. Overall it took about 2.5 hours and we thoroughly enjoyed it. When we reached the car park I wanted to take a photo where River Gamlan meets River Mawddach but the best spot was unfortunately on the other side of the riverbank where no path was running at all. So I had to abandon this idea. We had a 3.5 hours drive ahead of us so we quickly jumped into the car and were on the road again soon after that. My final conclusion is that this was definitely a place to return.
